Holiday Hair and Make-up

in Hair, Make-Up

As was commented in a previous posting, one cannot rely on her precious wardrobe to ensure super-styldom alone. Hair and make-up play a huge role in making sure that one current and completely put together. In this particular post I would like to explore the right and wrong ways to coif and make-up one’s self to perfection, in order to make a grand entrance and a lasting impression at your next upscale gala or regular party.

Let’s begin with hair. The most important aspect of a good coif is seeking out the BEST person for the job!

NO!

NO!

So, if you’re new in town, or just fed up with your current stylist, don’t be shy about approaching strangers on the street whose cut and/or color you admire, they may or may not be able to lead you in the right direction. I have also learned from past experiences, that it’s important that your stylist have a terrific sense of style her or himself. His or her haircut and color should be au currant and their shoes, clothes, and make-up should be admirable or something that you could potentially see yourself wearing. I, for instance fell in love with my current stylist the moment I met her once I saw her perfectly angled

bangs and minimalist but savvy outfit…. I just knew immediately that she was a keeper! It’s also imperative to go to a stylist who listens to what you want – If you say, “Only cut 2 inches!” he or she should oblige the request and not hack off the majority of your locks. So what styles are hot for holiday fetes? I think a perfectly placed pony tail always hits a

high note especially when teased at the crown. This simple style is great because it shows off your dangly earrings and super suave ensemble. French twists are nice as well for the same reason and have a regal/Hepburn effect. Not into “up-do’s”? Skip the rubber bands and bobby pins and wear your tresses cascading down – I love the soft waves that were featured on many of the spring runways this past season, especially when

paired with an adorned headband- with say a sassy flower or feather. What to avoid??? Up-do’s with curly-q tendrils circa 1990- never attractive and not at all flattering. Banana clips or other jewled clips – a la Sarah Palin – need I say more area also a big no-no, and spiral ringlets are ugly too- who wants to look like Little Bo Peep?

Make-up is so much fun this time of year. I love getting party-fied with metallics on my

lids and luminating powder on my cheeks. The holidays are great for glamming it up big time! Plums and purples are big right now – for evening, try a smoky plum eye rather than dark black or gray for a different approach. Finish your dramatic eye look with thick black lashes (go faux if you need to) a very simple nude lip, and shimmer highligher on the cheekbones.

Maybe eye make-up is a little challenging for you… How bout if you give a bight

lipstick a try instead. Power up your pout with a royal scarlet red hue or a bright pink. Should you choose to go this route ensure that all the other make-up on your face is super simple. Dust your face with a tad bit of bronzer, and plump up the apples of your cheeks with a smidge of pink. Leave your lids alone but swab your lashes with a dollop of mascara. Sweep a little silver luminescence in the inner corner of your eyes, your cheekbones, and the bow of your lips and you’ll see just how sweet it is!

What to avoid with make-up? Overdone bronzer, racing stripe blush in effulgent pink, darkly hued eyes

paired with over-the-top lips, and of course brown lip liner paired with barely there light pink/beige gloss. While glittery extras add some sparkle and spice, overdone, caked on make-up can come off looking clown-ish. Pick and choose wisely and always make certain that you are accentuating your strongest features.

Yes Christina you should definitely “ROCK” your purple flower headband! I have one myself and can’t wait to show mine off as well – headbands are the ultimate hair statement of the season!

Jane… how doe you feel on short hair styles, something a little more out there, i.e. modified mohawk, etc…. BTW Victoria G is looking a little tranny mess!!

Jane. I also have access to a purple flower headband. Where should I make my ultimate statement?

Jen Gar:

Very few women can pull off a short pixie/spiky style like Victoria Beckham for instance. However when done right it looks super fresh! The main prerequisite, in my opinion? A gorgeous face and chiseled cheekbones – a fabulous smile helps too.

The modified mohawk updo is something, I can appreciate (think Gucci runway hair and ads a few years ago) but it must be done with the right make-up and outfit or it will look all wrong.

And yes, I agree that Ms. Gotti is a hot mess.

Toph:
Save the flower headband for your gorge girlfriend who we all know can pull it off, and find yourself a cool hat to wear this winter instead.
