I am not a country music kind of gal, but I don’t mind checking out the fashions worn by some of the industry’s brightest stars and making my comments on their choices of course!

The days of atrocious and excessive fringes and sequins are pretty much long gone and instead, the country stars of today are donning glam and tasteful frocks that exude stylish confidence and appeal. While there were some misses, the majority of the ladies looked great – even though the styling could have been tweaked a bit with a few…

Taylor Swift was very prim and fem in a frothy and tastefully sequins gown in glittering gold and champagne. Experts say that nominees who pretty much think that they have it in the bag usually don a more conservative “pretty” look as opposed to selecting an edgy/fashion-forward piece. I’d say that Taylor definitely planned ahead with this one. I am also loving her retro-romantic hair that falls softly around her face and prettily finishes the look.

STYLE TIP: when donning sequins keep accessories at bay. The sparkle of the dress is first and foremost. Bling isn’t necessary nor apropos with a look such as this.

Pretty girl Carrie Underwood did another metallic just right choosing an icey platinum rather than glittering gold like Swift. The form fitting gown perfectly accentuated the singer’s petite frame and the intricate and unique beading was quite current and a change from standard sequins. Underwood too got her hair dead-on – full bouncy curls and easy upswept sides break up the severity of the structured embellishment and enhance the overall look.

STYLE TIP: Over-the-top dresses with excesive bling or exaggerated anything are best suited with a more fem approach to hair and make-up, while a more conservative frock lends a plain canvas for artisic cosmetics and coifs.

Gunmetal was the shade of choice for Kellie Pickler who donned this season’s popular one-shoulder look for the evening. While I like the shape of the gown and the interesting color, I find it to be utterly unflattering on Pickler who recently changed her more complimenary blonde locks for a blah auburn that does nothing for her. While I agree that an asymetrical look is best with an updo this one was a tad messy and did nothing to perk up the look… ALSO, Pickler’s jewelry is all wrong too. A better choice when wearing a non-traditional neckline would be oversized chandelier earrings. NOT a short collar necklace that competes with the single strap.

Kim Williams-Paisely in one word looked AWFUL. The autumnal colors that made up her chiffon frock did little to make Kimmy a standout and the simple design was a snoozefest. HAIR? Terrible too. The half-up, half-down look is sophisticated when done right, but in a case like this appears more juvenille than jazzy. Quite honestly, a dress like this is entirely too casual for a red-carpet event and certainly not suitable for an actress in the public eye. Kim has a great figure and she could have really done it up!

STYLE TIP: Short dresses can be just as elegant, if not more, than a long droopy look like Williams-Paisley’s. An abbreviated style with a fitted bodice and full circle skirt would have been far more festive AND flattering.

Who is Taylor Jacobson? Why she’s the tough as nails, nay sayin’, style-saavy gal who is an integral addition to the cast on “The Rachel Zoe Project” on Bravo TV. Yes, “Tay” could use a bang trim, however her eclectic mix of vintage prints and woodcutter plaids mixed with toughened up leather has me head over heels! “Tay” has a knack for choosing the perfect shoe to complete a red carpet look and dare I say, looks better in skin tight leggings and drapy blouson tops than her emaciated boss, Rachel who basically gets swallowed up by whatever outfit she thows on over her bones… Hmmph!

So what have I dug on Taylor after the first two episodes? Well, I can hardly ignore the FABULOSITY of the leopard Dior sheath she poured herself into on episode 2 - LOVE! The spunk and spice of the animal print paired with Taylor’s smokey eyes and tousled tresses was perfection and was the perfect outfit to don for a fash bash at Marquee in NYC! While this grrr-eat printed frock featured right isn’t Dior nor is it a sheath – it IS a fabulous way to incorporate animal into your reportoire. You can find this pretty piece by Diane Von Furstenberg at Dianiboutique.com. Wear this wrap in the fall with black leggings and over-the-knee boots or booties.

leather leggings

Taylor is also a knock out in fabulous second skin leather leggings – a must on my fall shopping list by the way! As with any leggings one must get the proportions right. Taylor balances out her look by doing her leggings with over sized (but not huge) button up shirts – this season she seems partial to plaids -and of course she finishes the look with sky high black booties – oh, and don’t forget the moto style biker jacket -BLACK of course. Naturally, now of course you want your own pair right?? To wrap youself tightly up in leather check out these leggings featured left by Jeffrey. Wanna buy? log onto le garconne and make sure you have extra credit on that Mastercard as these babies go for a smooth $1150.00. WOO-HOO! Finsh the look with a plaid shirt. I found this billowy one at Macys.com for a mere $19.99 – it’s all about the trade-off.

STYLE TIP: It’s ok to spend a little more on an “investment” piece – in other words something that you will cherish and wear a lot during the season and that will be a closet staple for years to come… Do leather leggings fit that description for you?! If not skip ‘em and instead spend more on some fabulous over-the-knee boots – another BIG time trend this fall that will mimick the look above nicely.

Wouldn’t you just love to approach some people on the street and give them an immediate make-over?! In the summer months dressing for comfort is quite popular and leads to things like Crocs with sweatpants (or whatever really), oddly colored and ill-fitting Capri pants, and daisy dukes clinging to the derrieres of undesirables. So in the spirit of bad dressers here are a couple of folks who could certainly use a little help in the styling department. Just remember the key to looking chic and put together is dressing for your body type and dressing in items that make you feel good. For instance, just because short denim cut-offs are de rigour doesn’t mean every Tom, Dick, and Harry should throw them on…

Let’s discuss this look featured to the right. Unfortunately I see this type of outfit played out over and over again. The worst part about it though is that this fashion-challenged individual probably thinks that this is sexy. “It’s not.” First, bike shorts are reserved for a bike, recumbent, regular, or otherwise or for a day at the gym, exercising outside, OR a day relaxing at your house. Second, this polka-dot nightmare of a top with strange cut-outs is simply unflattering. The busy pattern does nothing to compliment and only makes the eyes cross. Third, metallic, flat, Mary Janes are way to “school-girl’ish” for this disjointed look, not to mention the gold completely clashes with EVERYTHING. While metallic can typically be thrown on with “whatever”,here it’s just not working. If I were to do a make-over for this gal, I would start by throwing out everything that she has on (OK, keep the shorts for your work-outs). Next, I would choose items that play up her best features. In this instance, I would show off her legs that are shapely and attractive from the knee down. That said, a dress or skirt is an order. Also, I would avoid busy patterns on her upper half and instead go for a monochromatic look. The easiest look – a black or other solid color wrap dress with 3/4 sleeves that cover up the upper arm will make a world of difference. Heels are required and will elongate the entire look making her stand up taller and make her legs appear longer and even more attractive.

It’s not just the everyday looks that are unappealing, when some ladies step out at night (or for their wedding as is the case to the left) they tend to over-do it a bit. Before I even touch upon the actual dress, I need to comment on the overall styling – this includes hair, make-up, and accessories… Number 1. over-tanning is unnatural and doesn’t look good. Number 2. skip squared-off fake talons painted “French-style” with in-your-face white tips – NOT elegant (contrary to popular belief) Number 3. Too much make-up. Smoky eyes are great for a nightime soiree but a bit too garish for a bride. Number 4. The earrings are WAY too big and clash with the “gown” While I am a fan of large jewelry one must ensure that they don’t compete with the ensemble. Number 5. Too much hair. I enjoy curls and bounce but the long locks are just another distraction to the overall look. A chic chingon would have been a better option. THE DRESS – eek. In my humble opinion there is entirely too much boob-action and the pink crystal details are just, well, ugly. In contrast, the dress featured right is a much better option – elegant, pretty, and stylish. Hair and make-up are natural – with loose tausled waves versus gelled curly-q’s featured above. It’s really not hard to be chic and stylish – just remember to dress for your figure and you’ll always hit a home run!

Many of you were privy to my rants about the Bravo, Project Runway knock-off show, “The Fashion Show”. In the beginning, I tuned in and was less than impressed. The designers were super amateur, the designs were ugly and uninspired, and the host’s wise cracks were distracting to the viewer and not helpful for the hard-at-work designer. So, I was awaiting a finale show with less-than-desirable collections from the four final contestants, and boy do I need to eat my words. I was completely elated to see fabulous collections that were not only fashionable and stylish but also cutting edge and fresh. No one “Played it safe” and everyone created pieces that could potentially become major retail hits.

What did I LOVE about Anna’s collection? Just about everything really. Who could resist the ultra-fem floral frock that rocked the runway first?! Not only was the shape Divine, but the girly oversized bow detail on the back lined with red crystals made the look wonderful coming and going! I would also not be shy to saunter into a festive black-tie event in her vented almost accordion pleated balloon full-length gown OR be a guest at a cocktail fete in the jaw dropping gold metallic 3/4 coat layered over the 1940’s-ish navy sheath with beading details. While I do agree with the judges that her collection was NOT cohesive, I was so enamored by the looks she showcased, I didn’t care!

Daniella, the youngest designer of the group was quite industrious to create not only a complete collection, but also fabulous jewelry to complete the looks AND the catchy electronic music! WOW! I love Daniella’s masculine/fem combos and her re-invention of armour – which was both tough and pretty at the same time. Was Daniella’s collection pretty? No. Was Daniella’s collection fashion forward, and absolutely cutting edge. Without a doubt yes.

John Paul is the avante garde designer of the group who created a darkly hued collection that featured hoods, and a nod to indigenous dress. Straps and buckles replace girly bows and ribbons for this designer, but he definitely has a unique voice and aesthetic for the industry and it’s quite refreshing to see a collection where the designer truly thought outside the box!

My vote is for Anna – but tell me what you think!? Who’s the next BIG fashion designer born by Bravo TV?!

Ah, another year another Stan Hywet gala on the beautiful grounds of the stately old manor. I have attended the SH gala for the past six years and look forward to it year after year one because it marks the anniversary of my six-year-long courtship with my lovely mate, and two because it’s a chance to don a long flowy evening gown on a warm summer evening.

Since, the gala is “black tie” women must dress accordingly. Short dresses are ok so long as they are “gussied” up and not mere daytime sundresses. What will pass the test? Sparkly embellishment, ruffles, interesting necklines, and a beautiful fabric. What will not make the mark? Cotton or linen day dresses, skin-tight bandage dresses, or business attire. Long gowns are an obvious choice and since the summertime heat may come between you and your favorite heavy satin dress skip weighty fabrics and instead try chiffon or a drapy silk that is without excessive boning.

I must say, in the past I see a lot of “Pageant” like dresses(read: excessive sparkle, noticeable foam boobie cups, and in-your-face colors like canary yellow or brighter than bright pink) that not only look dated, but also look ridiculous on folks who aren’t on stage doing the “Lightbulb” wave. I have also (GASP!) seen a few ladies donning straw hats on the lawn as well… hats are terrific – however are reserved for afternoon tea or for another daytime event. So, please skip the toppers, they aren’t welcome after 5p. The following are some basic rules to follow when choosing your attire:

1. No “Homecoming Hair” a la 1980/90 with corny tendrils and cascading curly q’s.

2. No pageant dresses

3. Play up your best assets: Love your legs? Go short – try a pretty sequins dress and don simple gold wrap around the ankle high sandals. Rather show off your well-sculpted arms? Go long in a pretty chiffon dress that will flutter in the wind. Choose a pretty color like butter, petal pink, or chartreuse.

please don't

4. Dress your age. No 60 year olds in second-skin lycra and no 30-something in a dowdy drape-y nothing. This rule also applies to your shape…

5. When in doubt classic is the best way to go. Try a strapless black column gown with dainty pearls.

The Summer Solstice party at the Cleveland Museum of Art on June 20, was not only a celebration of the arts – featuring the unveiling of the Museum’s new East Wing, but also a chance for hundreds of people to attend a party. Cocktails flowed as guests mingled and enjoyed the various entertainment throughout the evening that included a Jazz band and a DJ from New York City who spun Bhangra infused electronica to a revved-up crowd. In the style department the majority of the attendees disappointed in uber-casual shorts, t’shirts, cropped pants, and breezy daytime sundresses – which is quite appalling actually for an event that took place after-five. However, the stylish couple here impressed that Clevelanders certainly deserve a spot on the style map. Casey Burry and her significant other Ike Karipides, Cleveland transplants from New York City, injected a city chic vibe to the event donning summer cocktail attire that was altogether eye catching, enviable, and well-styled.

Casey, President of Tagua, a line of organic handcrafted jewelry and handbags from South America, sashayed through the fete in a champagne toned silk frock by Elia Abuchaibe for Tagua that was embellished with over-sized baubles and coppery disks. Casey topped the whole look with a shrunken lightly quilted and shortsleeved black vintage jacket and punctuated her whole look with perforated black closed toe t-strap custom-made tango shoes that added a truly unique close to the entire look. Accessories? Beautiful antique-like chandelier earrings from Mexico and a vintage handbag. Casey’s look is a melange of old and new, custom-made and store bought, so, when she seeks a fabulous new find in Cleveland she can’t help but to dip into Saks Fifth Avenue at Beachwood Place to examine the potential wares. Those interested in checking out Tagua’s stylish wares should log onto: www.tagualife.com.

Ike looked fresh for summer in cherry red linen Ralph Lauren trousers topped with a modernized Etro seersucker jacket – that was cut slimmer than the classic counterpoint creating Euro-chic appeal. Ike’s white shirt was custom-made in Singapore and his shoes were cognac colored TOD’s driving mocs that kept the whole look in perspective. Ike’s eclectic wardrobe and style, has been cultivated as a result of travel abroad, however he has found some agreeable pieces at retailers like Kilgore Trout in Eaton Collection (Chagrin Blvd.) and at Cuffs in downtown Chagrin Falls. Check these retailers out for some fashionable, yet classic essentials.

So Akron, Cleveland, Canton, WHOEVER, take a few hints from this stylish couple:

1. Don’t “Play it safe” – forgo your favorite denim and wear a pair of pants like Ike in a fun color – keep everything else relatively neutral.

2. Save up a little for a on-of-a-kind custom-made piece like Casey’s fabulous Tango shoes – you’re sure to get compliments

3. Dress up! Even if you’re just going out to dinner it’s nice to throw on some extra-special – You’ll feel better if you look better and you may even earn a compliment or two.

4. Head to a vintage shop or website (check out my examiner page for a list of good sites) and purchase a unique piece that will help you stand out.

If any of you out there feel that your style deserves to be featured on my Ohio.com or Examiner.com page please send me a picture and you just might end up another Akron/Cleveland Style Setter!

I was an avid almost obsessive Project Runway watcher. I was glued to the tellie waiting to see what the great designers would come up with week after week – in short, I loved the show – every season, all the designers, and of course Tim Gunn. So, I was a tinge disappointed when Bravo unveiled a Project Runway inspired series called “The Fashion Show” but still curious and ready to watch. Tonight marks the third episode and so far, I have been underwhelmed by the designer’s creations as well as the hosts, fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi and (former?) singer Kelly Rowland… Yes, Kelly looks put together on the show, but I am still uncertain how she became a purveyor of style. Her biting comments, are a bit too scripted, making it seem like the producers specifically told her to make disparaging remarks on purpose while the other host, Isaac tries a little too hard to get into subtle “queen” mode when he finds something distasteful. Annoying.

The designers also put me in a bad mood. It’s no secret that those in fashion like to dress a little more on the avante garde side, but my goodness, Mr. Honduras (Merlin), who himself wears skin-tight pajama-style leggings with riding style fur hats with feathers, and of course his women’s white stiletto go-go boots, makes me question his level of taste (I think he’s going for eclectic equestrian) – However, that being said, his clothing seems to have the most potential at this point.

Other characters like, Johnny who is a little too obsessed with harem pants. This ‘09 trend, is very hard to wear, and typically unflattering especially on a man – and his unique coif is a tad unsettling as well – long locks spiraled into a messy bun worn on top of the head… Again, I have to question his ultimate style sense.

So all that complaining aside, I will continue to tune in, perhaps these creators need a few more weeks to get broken in and will wow me in the end with some terrific and cutting edge looks. I’ll be watching.

Purportedly “power dressing” induces those in professional positions to work harder to keep them, and those seeking employment to up the ante a bit in order to nab a plum gig.. Whatever the case may be, we are seeing a re-emergence of this trend right now which some say is a reflection of the current economic crisis - so, if you want to look more manly, or just plain fashionable, take a hint from Donna Karan’s Fall 2009 collection featured left… Choose jackets with structured shoulders (yes ladies it’s ok to resurrect the shoulder pads), choose shapes that are less fitted, and pants that have a more masculine shape. Hate pants? Choose a sophisticated pencil skirt that hits jst below the knee and keep your color palette classically manly – navy, red, blue, gray.
